UCL Academicals Mens 1st XI 6 - 0 London University Mens 1st XI
Match Report
Our first team provided a solid performance that saw them remain top of the league. While other clubs may moan about being caught cold thats not something that will ever happen to a professional outfit from Gower Street. Christmas saw them leading the league by 3 points and the aim from our boys has to be to maintain that gap over the next few weeks. So to the match, We managed to get an early lead from our first attack thanks to some solid work from Sherm at the top of the D which saw a tap in for Sacha to open his account for 2008. However, this spurred the students on to some great attacking moves showing that they have some quality players. Good saves were seen from Dan Borg while Sheri and Saenger provided crucial tackles. The accies were on the back foot and needed to freshen things up. Robbie Wyatt came on to do just that. Setting Eb Muktar up for a good chance that saw him hacked down on the P spot. Sherm put away the resulting flick for a 2-0 lead. It was quickly turned to 3-0 with Sherm again cooly slotting home with a top of the D strike. Christmas truant Sacha Benson-Cooper made it 4 after 20 seconds of the second half. Tom Sangataweep selflessly setting him up after a good run. Undeniably the best goal was the 5th which saw the back 2 of Davies and Heaton combining for a goal that one only dreams about. A silky run, bullet pass and top corner deflection from the diving Heaton. Needless to say more was to come, a flick from Sangers brought a good save from the UL goalie but with the deadly killer instinct Tom lashed the rebound high into the net. That was our lot. The umpires played their part with solid performances, letting the game flow and getting the big calls right. The students provided us with a good opposition, they've got some dangerous forwards and just need a bit more organisation. They'll surprise a few more teams this season, like they did when they beat OCs. So to next week, the Wanderers should provide a stern test but the way we've started the year the boys are champing at the bit and can't wait until saturday comes!
