UCL Academicals Mens 1st XI 2 - 1 Tamworth Men's 1st XI
Match Report
Our Quarter Final opponents were Tamworth from the Midlands who are a division and a step up in class from our opponents in the previous round, Ashby. We knew we were in for a tough time, therefore, and this feeling was heightened with Tamworth having a hockey-free Saturday, meaning they would therefore be travelling down at their leisure, fresh and rested. We could only hope that the bright lights of Kingston provided a irrestibable lure on the Saturday night. And so it proved, despite the opposition turning up with half the town of Tamworth (incredible scenes) in tow. Meanwhile, our own preparations were going far from smoothly.... Crazy J was on a post-clubbing comedown and therefore even more vague than normal, cup captain Borg had decided to take his boyfriend for a spin in his Toni and Guy mobile and there didnt seem to be a single train running in the entirety of southern England. Incredibly, everyone managed to get down on time (ish) and looking around the training room we actually had a pretty tidy line-up. The smell of Brasso had become too strong for Bolina to resist thus throwing off his self-imposed cup exile and Bott had returned from skiing. Alas, the allure of a national cup final is still not enough to prevent little Robbie spending his weekends gawping at flamingos. A further surprise awaited us on emerging onto the pitch which had clearly been used to film an episode of Baywatch the previous day. In the time honoured tradition of those giants of modern football, Milton Keynes Dons, Tamworth sought to hit their big man up front early and play off his knock downs. Regrettably, we started even slower than the pitch and found ourselves a goal down early on to such a route 1 approach. As the half wore on, we came more and more into the game; were thrown a lifeline when a Sangtaweep mis-flick trickled underneath their embarassed keeper; and actually finished the half in front thanks to Davies snaffling in a rebound. Borg's half-time crotch adjustments had the desired effect and the second half was a much more controlled Accies performance with the only nervous moments coming when down to 10 men after the needless dismissals of Alvis and Martin (the latter to a particularly creative piece of umpiring). In the end, a relatively comfortable victory setting up a winnable semi-final against Wimborne Wayfarers to take place at our home fortress on Sunday March 30th.
